i spent today falling in & out of consciousness as snow climbed up the trunks of the trees around my house. coiled tails of dreams dropped from the surface when i woke & were replaced again by others & others, as i got up, took a bath, & went back to sleep. got up, talked to my parents, & went back to sleep. got up, opened my door for the cat, & went back to sleep.
the strongest dream was the first, that i crawled from with the sounds of the mailman's knock & stumbling footsteps down the stairs in the morning. my mother told me he was struggling under the weight of packages catching mounds of white, declaring, no one will be driving today. in my room the dream spread itself across their muffled voices, its details all shown to me. now the place & time & faces have faded cheshire-like to only eyes, something in them missing & something else put there to replace it, gaps & overlaps around its edges. my fingertips wrinkled with water are drawing back.
